What Theming Options Are Available for SharePoint Site Collections?
SharePoint administrators can control themes at the site collection level using the SharePoint admin center or PowerShell. Key options include:
- Custom themes: Organizations can create and upload company-branded themes using the SharePoint Theme Generator tool.
- Tenant-level control: Global admins can restrict which themes are available to site owners or enable/disable custom themes across the tenant.
- JSON-based theme definitions: Advanced customizations use JSON to define exact color palettes that align with brand standards.
- Header and navigation customization: Beyond themes, SharePoint modern sites allow header layout changes (standard, compact, minimal, or extended) via Settings > Change the look > Header.
Tip for intranet deployments: If you are deploying SharePoint as an enterprise intranet (for example, with Dock 365's SharePoint Intranet Portal), consistent theming across all site collections strengthens brand identity and improves user adoption.

FAQs
How do I change the SharePoint site theme without admin rights?
Owners of the site (and not only administrators) have the right to modify the appearance of their SharePoint site by using the menu Settings -> Change the look -> Theme, if the tenant administrator hasn’t limited this possibility. In case if this choice appears to be unavailable, contact your SharePoint administrator.
Can I create a custom color theme for SharePoint that matches my company brand?
Indeed. Microsoft offers a Theme Generator for SharePoint, which allows the user to enter the brand colors and create a JSON file. This theme is then uploaded to your SharePoint tenant by the global or SharePoint administrator through PowerShell.
Will changing the SharePoint theme affect my site's content or documents?
The modification to the visual theme will have an impact on the colors, fonts, and background of the website, but it will not have any impact on documents, lists, pages, or permission levels whatsoever.
How do I change fonts in SharePoint modern sites?
Font personalization in modern SharePoint sites is more restrictive compared to the classic sites. You can manage your fonts either from Header and Footer within Change the Look settings or by adding fonts into the custom theme JSON file. Complete font management normally involves SPFx customizations.
Does the SharePoint theme apply to all pages on my site?
Yes – application of the theme using “Change the look” affects all pages in that particular site collection. If different themes are needed for different sites, then different themes should be applied to those different sites individually.
